About the blog
The idea of this blog primarily came about as an attempt to raise awareness about Malta's Cultural Heritage. As a professional working in the immovable cultural heritage in Malta, it is frustrating to note that many locals are unaware of the value of the heritage we are surrounded with. Also, the phrase "familiarity breeds contempt" could have been coined for Malta. Many time, ignorance is inherent owing to a lack of appreciation. My father and his siblings hated their vernacular dwelling with a passion and they all went for something completely different such as terraced houses, penthouses and new apartments. To use another cliche, the grass is greener on the other side so people tend to want to live in houses which are different from those they grew up in. This trend is now resulting in people who lived in new dwellings when they were young are appreciating and returning to these older houses.
The second reason is for exposure of Malta to emigrants who love their homeland and their families, particularly if they have never visited. Like most Maltese, I have family members and friends who have Maltese roots but live around the world. The second and third generation Maltese who have experienced Malta in person cannot get enough of it while those who emigrated for economic or other purposes look at Malta with nostalgia. Some of these people may not have seen all these places, particularly the ones off the main routes.
The third reason is for the type of visitor who dislikes groups and one for all packages. These people usually like discovering places off the beaten path and. For these people, it is important to take their time, look at what they are interested in and probably most importantly, experience the place as close to a local as possible.
I hope that the blog provides you with the info you came here to look for. I will be using English as the main language, however if there is enough interest, I am willing to use Maltese too. There will necessarily be a smattering of Maltese, mainly with regards to toponyms, technical words and names.
Finally, feel free to leave your comments and suggestions. I will accommodate requests whenever possible.
